Victim’s mother speaks out after gay nightlife murder verdict

Umberger, a political consultant in New York for business from Washington, DC, was found dead inside his boss’ Upper East Side townhouse, where he was staying.


Linda Clary, the mother of murdered gay Republican political consultant John Umberger, felt a sense of fulfillment the day after two men were convicted of the murder of her son.

Clary said she was feeling “a little bit overwhelmed” from the moment her son’s body was discovered by NYPD in his boss’ Upper East Side townhouse to hearing the jurors “be so definitive” in their guilty verdict.

“It’s a sense of affirmation,” she said. “It’s 12 people affirming what we knew to be true.”

Jacob Barroso, 32, Robert DeMaio, 36, and Jayqwan Hamilton, 37, were convicted of murder, burglary, robbery, conspiracy, and more for drugging five men over the course of a year in 2022 in Manhattan Supreme Court on February 10. Two gay men — Umberger, 33, from Washington, DC, and 25-year-old Julio Ramirez, a social worker — were among the five dead men.
